A Secure Space for Knowledge to Flourish: Gift Foundation Impact at Madrasatul Arafah, Sylhet
Gift Foundation Trustee and Vice Chair, Muhammad Monzur Haque, recently visited Madrasatul Arafah, Sylhet, Bangladesh on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, to review the completed building project supported by the Gift Foundation. During the visit, Mr Haque spent valuable time with teachers and students, witnessing first-hand how the improved facilities are positively shaping their learning and daily lives.
Mr Haque expressed his appreciation after hearing directly from staff and students that the project has been a clear success. He noted that the new structure has created a secure, dignified, and effective learning environment, enabling students to focus fully on their studies without concerns about safety or exposure to harsh weather.
From Vulnerability to Stability
Previously, the Madrasah operated from a single ground-floor structure with a tin roof, offering limited protection from rain, wind, and cold conditions. During adverse weather, rainwater would enter classrooms and sleeping areas, making it difficult for students to study or remain overnight. Poor insulation and an open structure further affected students’ comfort and wellbeing.
With the construction of the first floor, the Madrasah has been transformed into a safe, weather-protected educational space.
Students can now study and stay overnight securely, free from the challenges that once disrupted their learning. The improved building has also enabled the Madrasah to open a direct main entrance onto the street, replacing the previous access route through neighbouring homes - a significant improvement for privacy, safety, and accessibility.
One long-standing student shared that he now studies and sleeps in comfort, no longer worrying about rainwater dripping through the roof or feeling cold due to the previous poor structure. Improved ventilation, secure windows, and solid construction have made a meaningful difference to daily life at the Madrasah.
A Powerful Reflection on the Pursuit of Knowledge
Reflecting on his earlier visit in August 2022, Mr Haque noted the remarkable physical transformation of the Madrasah. However, he emphasised that one powerful quality had remained unchanged - and had, in his view, grown even stronger - the students’ hunger for learning and dedication to knowledge.
He observed that their passion for learning was never diminished by the poor building conditions of the past, nor has it been taken for granted with the improved facilities today. This unwavering commitment to knowledge, regardless of circumstance, was described as deeply humbling and inspiring.
Honouring the Roots of the Partnership
During the visit, both the Madrasah leadership and Mr Haque fondly remembered and offered duʿāʾ for Sheikh Fahimul Anam رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, who initiated this project and partnership with Madrasatul Arafah. Prayers were made that Allah ﷻ accepts his efforts, grants him the highest ranks in Jannat al-Firdaws, and allows this project to continue as a source of ongoing reward (ṣadaqah jāriyah).
A Secure Space for Knowledge to Flourish
Reflecting on the overall impact of the project, Mr Haque reiterated that secure and dignified spaces are essential for the pursuit of knowledge. By providing students with a safe sanctuary to learn, reflect, and rest, the Gift Foundation helps ensure that knowledge is acquired with focus, confidence, and purpose - enabling students to grow into individuals who can contribute positively to society.
